Armed with a series best finish of third during the 2003-04 season, Argentina has always been a formidable opponent on the series. They have two Pan-Am Games silver medals after losing to Canada in both finals in 2011 and 2015, and claimed a silver medal at the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens. In 2018, Argentina solidified their spot on the podium three times, winning a silver medal at Cape Town and Las Vegas Sevens and a Bronze in Sydney.
One of the most entertaining teams on the series, Australia always brings excitement to the field. In the 17 seasons of the series history, Australia have finished in the top six 11 times. The Aussies also have one Commonwealth Games silver medal (2010) and two bronze medals (1998, 2014). Finishing fourth in the 2018 series, Australia claimed the gold medal at their hometown tournament in Sydney, followed by a bronze in Hamilton and a silver in Singapore.
As the hometown team, Canada always bring fans to their feet! Canada is the two-time defending gold medalist at the Pan-Am Games (2011, 2015), and reached the Commonwealth Games quarterfinals in 1998 and 2006. In 2017, Canada won the countries first Cup title at Singapore Sevens, beating USA in a thrilling victory that made the entire nation proud. They remain in the top 10 on the World Series heading into the 2019 tournament.
One of the top teams on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, England took home the cup at Canada Sevens 2017. They won silver at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and took home a Bronze at the most recent 2018 games. In the sports inaugural Olympic year, England took home a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics (as Great Britain). They finished the 2018 series with a Bronze medal in both Dubai and Singapore and a Silver medal in Paris.
A phenomenal three-year stretch saw Fiji cement themselves as one of the greatest sevens nations of all-time. They won back-to-back HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series titles in 2014-15 and 2015-16, and then capped it all off by pushing through Great Britain to win gold at Rio 2016. Their 2018 series was filled with non-stop entertaining play that left fans on the edge of their seat every tournament. They claimed six podium spots in a row, winning a total of 5 gold medals and 1 bronze. They are the reigning Canada Sevens champions and will surely fight to defend the title in 2019.
Although France has been featured in every edition of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, they have yet to cracked a top six finish in the series standings, with a seventh-place finish being their best effort in both 2003-04 and 2005-06. The lucky number seven continued for this team, as they finished in that place at the 2016 Rio Olympics. They also have two fifth place finishes at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2005 and 2013. France has claimed two Challenge Trophy finals, in Dubai and Sydney, on the 2018 series.
